Citizen Charter

Aims & objective of the department :

  • Maintenance of accuracy in all weights &measures used in transaction and protection.
  • Protection of consumers against cheatingin weights & measures in transaction and protection.
  • To ensure correct quantities in weight, measures and packaged commodities.
  • To ensure mandatory declaration on packaged commodities such as net quantity, net weight etc.
  • To ensure sale of packaged commodities at the price (MRP) marked on the packages

In order to achieve the above goal the Department enforces and implements the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the rules framed there under.

We deliver the following services:

  • Verification and stamping of all kinds of weights, measures, weighing and measuring instruments as per provision of the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 and issue of verificationcertificate thereof.
  • Calibration of storage tanks used in transaction and protection and issue of calibration charts thereof.
  • Issue renewal of license to the manufacture / dealer / repairer of weights and measures.
  • Checking and determination of “net quantity” and errorin packaged commodities at the premises ofthe manufacturers on packers.
  • To protect the consumers interest conducts inspections / surprise inspection for detecting violation of the provisions of the Legal Metrology laws and to take legal action against the concerned traders, forms, etc. by registering prosecution case.
  • Compounding of offences as per provisions of the Legal MetrologyAct, 2009 by realizing fees as prescribed in rules.
  • Sending prosecution cases, if not compounded by the offenders, to the court of law for trial.

If the required documents are found complete / correct.

Checking and determination of net quantity

15 days from the date of receipt of complaint

Net quantity checking may also be done without receipt of complaint.

To protect the consumers interest conducts inspections / surprise inspection for detecting violation of the provisions of the legal metrology laws

No fixed time limit

The inspector of legal metrology  carries inspection on as regular basis.

Compounding offences

Max 30 days from the submission of application for composition

It depends on the time required for submission of the above report by the concerned Legal Metrology Officer.

Sending prosecution case

Maximum 6 months to 12  months

It may be extended  as per provision of CRPF Rule 1973.
