Major Educational Institutions of Dibrugarh District

There are mainly four Educational Institutions in and around Dibrugarh District. 


Dibrugarh University, the easternmost University in India, was established in 1965 consequent upon the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965, enacted by the Assam Legislative Assembly. It is a leading research and innovation driven University that acts as a spatial slot to configure the socio-cultural dynamics of North East India.The University encourages myriad enterprises that harbour on a constellation of thinking, theorizing, and reflection.

 Dibrugarh University is one of the educational centres of excellence, seeking to amalgamate multi-disciplinary fields with numerous theoretical perspectives, the realm of cultural diversity with the praxis of knowledge, and region-specific issues with a global horizon. The University has a prolific and productive industrial academia interface. With its strong global links in teaching and research programmes, the University offers dynamic educational experiences that prepare the next generation to lead and make a difference and thus contribute to the society at large. The University hosts 177 affiliated colleges and institutes that spread over nine districts of Assam. Dibrugarh University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and is recognised by all the universities in India and abroad.

It is situated at Rajabheta, five kilometres to the South of the Dibrugarh town and well connected by road, rails, air and waterways. The University has a vast sprawling campus (550 acres) set in bucolic and idyllic surroundings. Dibrugarh, which is one of the commercial and industrial hubs of North East India, also occupies a unique place in the field of art, literature and culture. It is internationally known as a rich tea producing district, and is also on the global map for its rich reserve of minerals like coal, oil and natural gas. Its diverse flora and fauna make it an exciting region from the environmental and ecological point of view.The various people who inhabit this district present a polychromatic ethnic mosaic and make it a very attractive destination for academia all over the globe.


Centre for Computer Studies

The Centre for Computer Studies (CCS) originates in a Computer Centre established in 1976, which taught a "Six-month Certificate Course on Computer Programming". In 2004 it was upgraded to the Centre for Computer Studies and started "Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA)". BCA was introduced in July 2004 and MCA and B.Sc. I.T in January and July 2007. The center has three computer laboratories as well as its own library.

The MCA programme of CCS is approved All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It is also an accredited study centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University

Admission to CCS is based on a state level Common Admission Test(CAT). Candidates are then called for a personal interview, counseling and admission. In addition, some programmes have requirements for passing 10+2 level with mathematics and/or statistics at some threshold mark in aggregate.

Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology

The Dibrugarh University Institute of Engineering and Technology (DUIET) was established in 2009 as a constituent institute and an integral part the university. The institute was established with due approval from the All India Council for Technical Education  (AICTE), New Delhi and necessary permission from the Assam state government.

The first session of the institute commenced in August 2009 with an intake capacity of 60 in each of the following disciplines to a B. Tech. degree:

  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering


DUIET is located in the Dibrugarh University campus. It has excellent infrastructure and facilities. The administration of DUIET is headed by Dr. M.C.Bora who is the institute director.

Centre for Management Studies

The Centre for Management Studies (CMSDU) is a management school that is part of  Dibrugarh University. It started functioning from 3 February 2003, with the first batch of Master of Business Administration (MBA) students].The three-year Bachelor of Business Administration(BBA) and the three-year MBA (part-time) classes started in 2004. 2006 saw the launch of the one-year PGDTM (Post Graduate Diploma in Tourism Management) Programme. It is also running a Ph.D. programme.

Centre for Juridical Studies

The Centre for juridical studies is a Centre of Dibrugarh University that imparts both undergraduate and Post Graduate legal education.The Centre was established in the year 2006. The Centre runs BALL.B (H)and LL.M (Constitutional Law, Corporate Law and Criminal Law Groups)courses.

Eligibility: For B.A.LL.B. (H): A candidate for admission to the Five- year B.A.LL.B. (Hons) Course shall have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or an equivalent examination securing at least 45% in aggregate of the total marks. Provided that there shall be a relaxation of 5% marks for SC/ST/OBC candidates. For LL.M.: A candidate to take admission into LL.M. Course must have 50% marks in aggregate in 3 year LL.B. or 5 year B.A.LL.B. (H) Course recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bar Council of India (BCI). The candidates appearing in final year examination of the aforesaid Programmes may also apply but at the time of admission they must produce the mark sheet and pass Certificate in original.

Admission Procedure: The admission to the aforesaid Programmes will be made only on merit basis through an Admission Test and (viva-voce/wherever applicable) to be conducted by the University. Admission cannot be claimed by any applicant as a matter of right. Note: In case of LL.M only, on being selected for admission, the applicant has to appear before admission committee at the Centre for Juridical Studies, Dibrugarh University with all original certificates, mark sheets and other requirements on scheduled date and time. If any selected candidate is unable to appear personally, he may send his authorized representative with the required documents. If any applicant fails to deposit prescribed fee within the stipulated time, his/her admission will automatically stand cancelled. If any selected candidate or his authorised representative does not appear before Admission Committee on scheduled date and time, his/her candidature shall be deemed to be cancelled without any intimation in writing.


Dibrugarh University was ranked in the 101–150 band overall in India by the National Institutional Ranking Format (NIRF) in 2018,[8] 84 among universities[9] and 29 in the pharmacy ranking.

2.Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH)

Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh is one of the premier and oldest medical institutes of the NE region of India. British Philanthropist Sir John Berry White, a retired brigadier of British army and later the civil surgeon of the erstwhile Lakhimpur district in 1870, contributed his lifetime earning of Rupees Fifty Thousand (present day valuation is more than 50 million of rupees) to establish his brain child “Berry White Medical School” in 1900 AD. This school heralded the beginning of Allopathic Medical Education by conferring LMP Diploma in old undivided Assam. In 1938, the Assam Branch of Licentiate Medical Practitioner in its annual meeting under the chairmanship of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the then premier of the Congress Govt. of Assam decided to upgrade the Berry White Medical School to a full fledged Medical College, Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh was established in 3rd November 1947, in the erstwhile US Military hospital of the second world war at Borbari, Dibrugarh through a process of up-gradation of Berry White Medical School immediately after independence, inaugurated formally by First chief Minister of Assam, Late Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi. The admission of the first batch of students was completed in September 1947 with 6 seats.

3. Dibrugarh Polytechnic

Dibrugarh Polytechnic is a premier technical Institute of upper Assam which was established in 1965.[1] It is affiliated to State Council for Technical Education, Assam under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Assam and is recognised by All India Council for Technical Education



The Institute is situated at the Lahowal, 1.8 km away from 37th National Highway. It is surrounded by lash green tea gardens providing excellent environment for study Dibrugarh Railway Station is 5km and Dibrugarh Airport is 6km away from it. The Institute is well-connected by roads to the Dibrugarh town.



The Institution offers 3 year diploma courses in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. All courses are affiliated to State Council of Technical Education, Assam under Director of Technical Education, Assam. Admission in these courses is based on the Polytechnic Admission Test(PAT) conducted by Director of Technical Education, Assam.

Regional Medical Research Centre, NE region(RMRC, The International Centre of Excellence) is one of the six regional centres Indian Council of Medical Reasearch(ICMR) and is located 10 km East of Dibrugarh city centre and 2 km. North of Bokul Tiniali at Lahowal. It covers the most remote and less developed, eight states of the north-eastern region of India and is responsible for carrying out Biomedical Research in the region. It was established in 1982 and runs with intramural grant from ICMR and extramural ad hoc projects from different funding agencies.

This premier Medical Research institute has been recognized as an "International Centre of Excellence" by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Washington University of USA.

The institute, in collaboration with Centre for Development of Advance Computing (CDAC), Pune, has been awarded the "MoSQuIT – mBillionth SAARC Countries Award 2013" recognized by The Grand Jury of The mBillionth Award South Asia as an Award Winner for the year 2013 for inventing disease surveillance system for malaria using mobile platform.
